I like among thousands of us are looking for ways to be heard. Is there something we can do on RO that might help direct a "talent searcher" ie: publishers, record companies, managers, recording acts looking for new material, music scouts etc. find us?

I have songs that I wish someone could hear. Is there something I can do to help open doors?

Could we set up a page called:

    "Songs ready for publishing"
    "Looking for a publisher"
    "Unsigned Artists"

or maybe a publishers page like:

    "Looking for songs to publish"
    "We need Dance music"

    Any suggestions?

Great idea. Perhaps we could have a format where once a month, submitted songs were voted on by the members of the board, and the winner then sent to various Record companies as having been voted the outstanding new work by professional engineers of RO. It would make the work stand out enough to get a listen to have "WON recognition by anyone, much less professionals. Secondly, you could break it down into categories Rock, Country, Jazz, Classical, etc then have a yearly winner, and that might lead to a single HIT, which would then bring further Clout for the Award, and you might just get some regular group of executives who'd appreciate the input, instead of the usual go to clubs routine, and if they turn out wrong, hey.. pro's recommended it, so his ass is somewhat covered. People love other people to do their work for them. Paul Larisey

hmm, nothing here yet. The votes are looking very possitive!

A former A&R for Warner just emailed me. That's what we need for board members..........

    Still mulling over possibilities... hmmm....

I'd be all over something like this! Even for a small fee, if I knew it were someone genuine doing the critiquing!

This is a good idea. It would be a great way to introduce new music to the people who can make it public, but only if you can stand to listen to all the crap thats gonna get mailed in! Still, its a great experiment. Try it for free, and when the submissions are too much, charge $$ and that will drop the number of frivolous submissions (or is that only poor frivolous people?). I'd love to hear some of the locals evaluate not only the music, but also the mix...

  9. Yeeeeeeesssssss, boy do I like the sound of this, Im surprised nobody thought of it sooner....I'm sure everybody would give their full support to a great idea like this...
also for novices, a guide to how to get their music uploaded onto MP3, real player, etc would be
    useful too.

    :)

  10. One of the best forum ideas I've seen. I would be willing to shell out some cash for the cause. Probably wouldn't hurt to throw it on some other forums i.e. Musicplayer, Motu-Mac etc. I would bet you would see more activity over here.

It will help if the buzz comes from the members.

  12. Bigtree… don’t feel bad about your response rate. Whenever I do a survey, I find I have to include some sort of incentive to get people to respond. (ie a short report on 10 tips for this or that). I didn’t respond either… oops I wasn’t supposed to mention that ;-)

Similarly, your response for the actual contest will be much better if you put something semi-tangible at the end of the rainbow. For instance, email the guys at Taxi. Ask them if they would be willing to judge entries (why not take some work off your hands). You can set up a separate heading in the forum and offer them free banner advertising. As a trade off, they will nominate winners and offer a prize (representation or maybe a year membership). They advertise the contest (and your site) on their homepage and you do the same. Hard to beat a win-win scenario. That’s just a starting point. Email me… I’d be glad to help.

Thanks Brad! we do have a small ad on there.

I'm learning that there are a few places out there doing this. I too have songs that I'm just sitting on because I don't now what to do with them.

I feel confident about RO because we are "coming from the street sort of speak. RO isn't run by corporations putting the squeeze on us. This is the type of thing I would like to see put together if you follow me. Maybe I'm out to lunch. hmmm

I'm a musician and have been all my life. I'm hopping we can make a difference in the end. Maybe an online label years down the road who knows.

It would be cool to see some of the higher profiles here responding but it seems most just sit back and let the other guy do it.

Thanks for the great idea Brad. I'll be in touch.

    Hey Bigtree

Persevere here man.... you have a good thing going and as you say no corporations just keep it independant and it'll be cool as to the song critiques, great idea my vote 100%!!

As a songwriter .. I can say .. there are not enough Good Songwriting contests out there ....

WE have done extremely well with billboard and some of the other big ones .. but the smaller contests tend to be clickish ...

it would be really nice to see a contest with real prizes .. that HAVE to do with the industry ... like NSAI is doing ...

Music Critiquing services is also a VERY good way to get people to come ... especially if a few use the service and like the results .. and I don't mean they have to get a good review .. but honest thought out reviews are hard to come by ...

you should make sure as a part of anything you do that the entries to any contest have to sign up to be a member of the community .. you can weed some out that way .. not many probably but some

and if you charge a SMALL fee .. that will even weed out more .. lol

just my thoughts on this . :)

  19. Sorry...My time did not allow me to read over the posts on this one...and I may be sticking my foot in my mouth...not knowing what others have replyed....BUT...

Distribution is the key. Screw signing with anyone.

    Self label...self distribution.

    Would you rather sell 10,000 CD's and make 5 bucks each...ot sell 200,000 and make a dime....Eh???

I have been working with some distributors...some good ...some not so good..Got most of it figured out now...after all these years...

Keep it in house...lets make RO a label that get's recognized.

    My label is Bandstand Productions.

Lets do different genres that will sell.

It is so much easier to do than to talk about.

I have some ideas...but simply...start making sure your production is really the bomb. Then it needs proper mastering (I am cheap...have the equipment) shameless plug I know...but damn...everyone wants to line their pockets some...and really I am open to doing some things...like really cheap to help the cause...so why don't we start doing...and get this on.

My studio is unschedualed for a while...so why the hell not??

Once you have a serious production...it will fall in place pretty tame. Easier than you think.

I tell you...it is not that damn hard to lay waste to the mainstreme. I do it all the time.]

    I propose nothing.

Without your tracks to master...well how good is it?

    You have to do...not wonder..

    Like Yoda said...Do...or Do not.

    Hit me...I can help some.

When I was just a wee lad, my friends and I decided to build a tree-house together.
Our parents chipped in some money and we all made our contributions in wood, nails, and labor.

    Cute idea, right?

Well, we spent a lot of time argueing about how and where the thing should be built. Then, we argued about who would spend more time in there, since we all couldn't fit in it at one time.

Nobody was truly happy with the final results and it finally broke up a friendship or two.

The point is, someone has to set some serious ground rules and everyone must agree to "play nice" if this thing is going to work.

I can seriously see someone's feelings being hurt if the song they poured their heart and soul into is greeted with negative commentary or a collective yawn.

Personally, I think we are all mature adults here, and will act accordingly. But, let's be aware of the possibility that someone is going to be offended at some point.... or maybe even jealous of someone who gets more attention than he does.

That's human nature.... and musicians can be VERY emotional when it comes to their work. I just hope that people will take the comments about their shortcomings as a way to help them out... not to slam them.
