Straight to camera.... sound isn't as good, camera electronics have "hash" in them. No need to worry about sync. Better for ENG type shooting.
Stand alone recording device.... better audio. Need to at least clap slate.

Why not go straight to camera and back-up to recording device.

Do not go into the camera. Have your own 32 Bit Float (From 24 Bit Analog) and record it to 192Khz on a Laptop. You will own this, and you want it to be the best so it can be your calling card. Don't compromise by using their camera and giving them the raw data. It is yours now. Let them know that. You may want to go into Animated film and the visual will have no importance as work on an audio DVD that people can listen to without visual distraction is best.

As for visual sync, any actor should use physical gestures to time it correctly.
In the 1968 film for The Doors' Hollywood Bowl concert, Ray Manzarek on keyboards wore bright white socks and tapped his foot so that during sync the beat of the music could be matched to his white socks in the darkness.

Thanks for the reply, but I have heard that when doing film on location, it is best not to put your trust in software but only dedicated hardware. is this the general oppinion or should a laptop be my next purchase instead of a dedicated HD or CF recorder? I already have Pro Tools le with a digi 003 and an Imac.

You are absolutely correct. On a large budget film, how do you think the director would feel if your computer crashed during the best take? Hardware is much more reliable. If you can, go and chat up some audio guys that work film sets. I have never met a single one that works from a laptop. The idea really is ridiculous. Even if it's a hard drive recorder at least it's function is hard wired. It doesn't have to boot, There's no maintenace going on in the background. It's single function is to record and that is hardwired into the unit. It will not crash. Sure there are potential problems with any gear but you need to minimize the chances wherever you can.

Here we go again! If you get hired to record audio for a film/video shoot, you don't "own it"....... it's not yours.
You really think dialog is better and easily usable at 192k?
