Bigtree… don’t feel bad about your response rate. Whenever I do a survey, I find I have to include some sort of incentive to get people to respond. (ie a short report on 10 tips for this or that). I didn’t respond either… oops I wasn’t supposed to mention that ;-)

Similarly, your response for the actual contest will be much better if you put something semi-tangible at the end of the rainbow. For instance, email the guys at Taxi. Ask them if they would be willing to judge entries (why not take some work off your hands). You can set up a separate heading in the forum and offer them free banner advertising. As a trade off, they will nominate winners and offer a prize (representation or maybe a year membership). They advertise the contest (and your site) on their homepage and you do the same. Hard to beat a win-win scenario. That’s just a starting point. Email me… I’d be glad to help.

I'm learning that there are a few places out there doing this. I too have songs that I'm just sitting on because I don't now what to do with them.

I feel confident about RO because we are "coming from the street sort of speak. RO isn't run by corporations putting the squeeze on us. This is the type of thing I would like to see put together if you follow me. Maybe I'm out to lunch. hmmm

I'm a musician and have been all my life. I'm hopping we can make a difference in the end. Maybe an online label years down the road who knows.

It would be cool to see some of the higher profiles here responding but it seems most just sit back and let the other guy do it.

As a songwriter .. I can say .. there are not enough Good Songwriting contests out there ....

WE have done extremely well with billboard and some of the other big ones .. but the smaller contests tend to be clickish ...

it would be really nice to see a contest with real prizes .. that HAVE to do with the industry ... like NSAI is doing ...

Music Critiquing services is also a VERY good way to get people to come ... especially if a few use the service and like the results .. and I don't mean they have to get a good review .. but honest thought out reviews are hard to come by ...

you should make sure as a part of anything you do that the entries to any contest have to sign up to be a member of the community .. you can weed some out that way .. not many probably but some

and if you charge a SMALL fee .. that will even weed out more .. lol

Sorry...My time did not allow me to read over the posts on this one...and I may be sticking my foot in my mouth...not knowing what others have replyed....BUT...

Distribution is the key. Screw signing with anyone.

Self label...self distribution.

Would you rather sell 10,000 CD's and make 5 bucks each...ot sell 200,000 and make a dime....Eh???

I have been working with some distributors...some good ...some not so good..Got most of it figured out now...after all these years...

Keep it in house...lets make RO a label that get's recognized.

My label is Bandstand Productions.

Lets do different genres that will sell.

It is so much easier to do than to talk about.

I have some ideas...but simply...start making sure your production is really the bomb. Then it needs proper mastering (I am cheap...have the equipment) shameless plug I know...but damn...everyone wants to line their pockets some...and really I am open to doing some things...like really cheap to help the cause...so why don't we start doing...and get this on.

My studio is unschedualed for a while...so why the hell not??

Once you have a serious production...it will fall in place pretty tame. Easier than you think.

When I was just a wee lad, my friends and I decided to build a tree-house together.
Our parents chipped in some money and we all made our contributions in wood, nails, and labor.

Cute idea, right?

Well, we spent a lot of time argueing about how and where the thing should be built. Then, we argued about who would spend more time in there, since we all couldn't fit in it at one time.

Nobody was truly happy with the final results and it finally broke up a friendship or two.

The point is, someone has to set some serious ground rules and everyone must agree to "play nice" if this thing is going to work.

I can seriously see someone's feelings being hurt if the song they poured their heart and soul into is greeted with negative commentary or a collective yawn.

Personally, I think we are all mature adults here, and will act accordingly. But, let's be aware of the possibility that someone is going to be offended at some point.... or maybe even jealous of someone who gets more attention than he does.

That's human nature.... and musicians can be VERY emotional when it comes to their work. I just hope that people will take the comments about their shortcomings as a way to help them out... not to slam them.
