Thread: Aphex, which model ??

A friend told me about an 80īs Aphex exciter-kind-of-thing that Iīd like to have. He just didnīt remember which model it was.

Itīs a "dynamic exciter", meaning that it brings up the high-end and brings life to whatever that is too compressed and thereby suffering from a high-end loss. Just as some of the dolby-stuff. Rumour has it that these are cheap and better. According to him you basically can squeeze the hell out of a track and with the Aphex hooked up it doesnīt sound compressed. Go figure...a friend of the friend apparently has a rack full of them and uses them all the time for everything. Makes me curious...

So anyone, do you have a clue of which model this could be??? Itīs supposed to have quite a lot of knobs on the front panel.

I had an Aphex Type C, this did not have the big bottom feature. I remember it had a drive level, a frequency control, and a mix control for each channel. It has a grainy effect on cymbals, and AC guitar high frequency sounds.

The best way to judge what it does is to try one. I ended up selling mine to a pirate FM radio station for pre-emphasis in the broadcast chain.

This process is some kind of high frequency harmonic generator, the harmonic sounds are mixed with the unprocessed sound, and appears to enhance the high's with out actually using EQ. It is not a compressor, though Aphex did, or does make compressors.
