Emily Lazar, Lee Flier, Valky are the first three that comes to mind. I don't know the real name of Valky, but she's a well known engineer on Music Player forums.
I've had two young women approach me in regards to going into audio as a career.
Please excuse if I sound ignorant, but are there any successful or competent female persons in the audio industry, or do you know of anyone... at any level of recording?
I'm curious about this and hope to put my friends' expectations more in focus.

Reel music makes the world go round
i thought emily was a mastering engineer?
you can have it fast you can have it cheap or you can have it right pick two
Trina Shoemaker - her credits include Sheryl Crow and many others.
Leslie Ann Jones (I think that's right) - she's high up at Skywalker Sound. Does everything from orchestral film scores to dialogue.
Lee Flier - she frequents the musicgearnetwork.com forums, not sure if she's here at RO.
There are many women who are the "unsung heroes" in the industry. NPR recently had a series about this - turns out some of the hits of the '50s and '60s were credited to producers who didn't really do anything and the real magic was applied by a very competent woman engineer. This also occured with competent male engineers during that time period.
Perhaps you don't hear about them much, but they're out there!

Sylvia Massey - Tool's Undertow, among many other artists and albums. Undertow is one of the most incredible recordings, technically speaking, I've ever heard.

Robin Coxe-Yeldham. The best teacher I had at Berklee. She thoroughly kicked my ass in every class I took with her. Unfortunately she passed away a couple of years ago.
I remember Sheryl Crow mentioned Trina Shoemaker by name when accepting the grammy award a couple of years ago... can't aim much higher than that. Doc
