studio monitors, and condenser mic Okay I've gotten most of my setup complete. ill be using Logic on my macbook pro with a persons fire studio firewire interface since it already also has a good preamp. whats a good set of studio monitors for my limit is 400$ and i was looking at the MXL 3000 microphone. also are the stock cables good or do i want to get the hdmi firewire cable for my interface?
Unless you have spent a good bit on room treatment, a large diaphragm condenser mic like the MXL is probably not your best choice. Is this strictly for voice? Are you going to record acoustic instruments? Amps? Drums? We need more info...
As for the monitors, KRK, Yamaha, and Mackie all make a decent budget monitor in that price range. You need to listen to them with a reference CD that you can trust and see what you like.
400 $ is too low budget if you want to recird and mix in that room.is it threated??i suggest spend a some $ more and make your own bass traps and broadband panels -as mentioned before-and place them in critical areas.the best cheap mics i've heard is ga project fc3 (about 150 $) and sontronics stc2.i think that the best monitors you can buy in that price range is krk rokit rp6 g2 and fostex pm05n...but believe me that the room iv very important factor.before i threat my room my 2500$ pair (unity the rocks) and my 400$ pair (krk rokit rp6 g2 ) sounded ..the same.after the threatment i was able to hear the differences between the monitors!
Room treatment, yes.
You can get JBLs LSR 2300 series around the same prices as the Rokit rp6s. Check the Tannoy 501a, then the fostex 05. I'd avoid krks myself -- too hyped lows but that doesn't mean it's a right decision for you. But then again, I'm mostly recording acoustic guitar stuff and I don't get too bass-y. Monitors are very personal decisions. And as long as you get used to the sound and know how they translate to generate usage speakers then yer good. Find a store with a good return policy and demo a couple for critical listening.
