    Default Vocal Effects, Mixing techniques.

Hey guys, I'm planning on recording a new song for my solo project and for the vocals during the verse I want to have my voice sound different, like with an effect on it. The type of sound I want is like what Billie Joe's voice sounds like on the verses of American Idiot, it sounds like it has some reverb and maybe a little bit of a like megaphone sound. Also on the Green Day song Holiday, during the bridge it sounds like he has a megaphone sound. I like the sound more on American Idiot though. I'm not a huge Green day fan or anything they were just the best example I could find on short notice. So my question is, I'm using Line 6 gearbox and I'm wondering if anybody could help me get a good overdriven mic/megaphone sound without it sounding too distorted at all, I just wanted a subtle sound to it. Thanks a ton for any help.

try mixing the regular take with a very slightly delayed track that has a hi-pass filter around 300hz and some distortion. That might be what you're looking for, or at least give you an interesting sounding chorus.

As for the effect on Billy Joe's voice... it sounds like a little more reverb on top of a doubled vocal track. The verses seem to have that megaphone sound you're referring to

the megaphone sound, you can proably use some kind of lo-fi filter or, which ive done before is eq the vocals and cut the highs the lowest frequency it can go and the lows the highest frequency it lets you. and boost the mids a bit until you get that lo-fi sound.

for the megaphone, screw around with the frequencies in the mid range and of course just throw however much reverb you want...or record with two mikes. MAKE SURE THEYRE IN PHASE. and delay one of the tracks from 2-20 ms

If your using gearbox try switching out the mic pre for a guitar amp model. should give you the 'bite' your looking for and you can always turn down the drive ;)

sonofkamal, you should start a new topic when you want to ask a new question.
