Ready for mastering? This is my first full-band recording project.
It's about ready to be sent off for mastering (I think).
The band wanted it recorded and to sound "live".
So, a lot of my mixing process was corrective - dealing w/ bleed, mistakes on my part in the tracking, and few on the band's part performance-wise.
Thus, it has been a rather expansive undertaking:
1. 24 songs tracked over two days in late May.
2. A gradual narrowing down to 12 tracks over a couple of months
3. Constant work and revisionism through today (this minute)
The link below is a Sendspace link to the song that had the most work, and I hope, is indicative of the whole project.
I included an mp3 (first) and wav (second) link.
The wav is preferable (), but mp3s d/l a lot quicker with sendspace.
Any suggestions/critiques are greatly appreciated.
Also, if anyone has an idea of a better way to transfer/exchange tracks than Sendspace (I'm avoiding ftp for now), please chime in.

I like it but the drums are hard to hear.
kick is good, but need more snare and cymbals, i might bring the gtr and vox down a smidge too.
Unfortunately, the drums are a major issue.
This was recorded in the sanctuary of a church, so each drum mic has issues with boominess/roominess.
I'll try and see if I can make these fixes w/o adding too much to that effect.

Note: These fixes worked for MMT, not so much on some of the other tracks.
In about a week or so, I'll post a track that is a little more dynamic (read: jazzier/funkier, tenor sax added)
A better balance in the overall mix. Something must be sonically standing in your way for the drums/bass to be so far removed from the overall sound.
I like the live feel as well.
Towards the middle/end of the recording there is a definite "squeal"/feedback, a high pitched vibration, trying hard to get loose. This sound breaks containment at the end of the song. What was that?(it is very present at the beginning as well...that would be a BIG problem to me, more so then the current rhythm section levels
The drums and bass do not seem to make sense together.
(That is a mix of audio and football terminology )

Yeah - is that sqeal supposed to be train brakes or something? It is more of a distraction than anything, imho.
Have you experimented with any gating and/or compression on the snare and cymbals? I can't offer specific advice, but you might be able to get a more present sound without adding too much of the room ambience.
I like the song - particularly enjoyed the lead vocals.

To Space and mw:
Yes, those are trains. The church is less than a mile from the biggest railyard in Cincinnati. They were added at the band's request. The lead singer is obsessed with trains apparently.
I agree, it is distracting. If I can find a way to have it augment instead, I will.
Space:
Do you mean there needs to be a better overall mix, or that it is fine?
Also, the bass/drums issue is the bassist's overactivity. We decided not to take a knife to the recordings to fix performance issues.
And to you both again:
The lead singer/guitarist was a joy to work with. He knows how to sing, and how to use a mic. Believe it or not, that was done with an MXL 3000 into a PreSonus TubePre.

The drums do sound clear, but in perspective it seems like they are 30 feet into the room behind the band.
I think it is the piano that is too prominent and not the guitar(s). Maybe the electric break needs less.
Sounds familiar in a comforting way.
