We are a young punk band in Los Angeles and this is one of the songs on our first ...soon to be released... CD. Any and all comments will be appreciated.

    Hi LM

Tho I am not normally a fan of punk music, this had some very interesting aspects. I really dig the tone on the bass during the little bass solo, it is killer! The mix is nice and hot on my system.

I am just getting into this mixing game so I can't offer tech advise like the guru's around here. I did however feel that 2 places had very minor timing issues. Just before what I am calling the bass solo, it seems to stumble a little and when the fast guitar first starts it seems to drag just a second but then catches up.

Overall very nice! Oh and the vocals are great - nice back and forth work between them.

thanx drwu for taking the time to listen to our song. Our first CD, BEGINNER'S LUCK has 13 songs on it but we only uploaded "One Nite's Stand" for review because we thought it was representative of our basic sound and the quality of the recording. However, is there a formula or strategy that we could/should use in deciding the order of our songs as they are placed on the CD?

    thanx again,
    LM

I am sure there is a strategy, but I have no idea what it is. I would also imagine there would be different strategies for different genres. Maybe someone else around here will kick in some ideas. Or you might find another forum on this site that is slanted more toward that part of production.

    Good Luck!

For a breaking band the best strategy is to place the best song first. Followed by the next best and so on. If a record company listens to it you want to put your best foot forward. I'm with drwu about the timing at spots and IMO the drumming is a bit busy and not as groove oriented as I would like. Too many rolls. Overall it is a very ambitious undertaking and it sounds like everyone is stretching to meet the mark. I suggest the band re record the effort again, this time knowing what they are going to end up with. This is a very common practice, to record a record twice, once to “demo” it and the second time for real. Since I haven’t heard the rest of the CD I can’t say if it needs re recording but IMO this cut does. It’s a very good concept and the performances are about 80% there but I bet they could do it better. …. Fats

Pretty clean, a shade "racketty" in the mids to upper mids (too much compression) and a lack of bass punch that could be done in mastering.

I give it a good B+ for perfomace, a c- due to compression of the mix, and an A for concept and execution.

I think it all could go to another level without the buss compression and proper mastering...but what else whould I say?

I think it could translate less like a transistor radio and more like a live gig...you dig?

Thanks for the reviews. You are all right and we wish we could re-record but we spent every cent we had getting this song and our other songs recorded. We are 19 and most of us are full time students so $$ is definitely an issue. Would it be unprofessional or tacky to ask the guy who mixed/mastered your recording to give us the unmixed/unmastered version so that we could noodle with the mix??
