When was this recorded? 1985? The sound is classic but, yeah, tough to go beyond that with the vocal being so rough. Oh hey! Look everybody...Ralph Machio just stopped in. What's that Ralph? Ralph says he would like to use this song in his next film...

The synthy/stringy parts at the begining and during the break are also rough and the sound doesn't seem right. It's not 80s enough. It's too 1991. You need to find a more Van Halen sounding patch.

    keep us posted.

Ow! Hmm. . . I like that. :-) I guess I was asking for it. hehe

Well, no major problems with song construction then, I guess? Part of the problem with relying on sequenced instruments is that the MIDI patches are (almost by definition) straight out of the 80's. I've got banks and banks of tones to use but I'm no keyboard/stringthesist so I just compose the part and pick the nearest patch.

I love it when you talk rough to me.

    PS: Who's ralph machio?

He was the Karate Kid. Maybe I spelled his name wrong. I wasn't trying to slam you! I like the 80s vibe. I like old school sounding midi, for that matter. It is a recognizable sound...a popular sound. How many 80s format radio stations are popping up. Go with it.

You probably know all about this stuff, but if you are looking for ways to update the sound of your midi compositions, think about buying a program like Reason. Amazing piece of work, that--a midi musician's friend, for sure.

I'm sad that Musician's Friend has made me think twice before using the phrase "musician's friend" in casual conversation. Uff da.

And if you care to pick on me, I post my crap under the name cheap bastard. fire away!

LOL. I'd love to give everyone's stuff a listen but apparently my native version of QuickTime (on Mac, BTW) isn't recognized by NoWhere radio. Grr. To make it even worse I just downloaded RealPlayer and for some incomprehensible reason, it isn't recognizing that either.

    Arrggh. . .

TA, sometimes the person uploading their tunes forget to click on "let everyone download". :d:

This program is compatable with a Mac.

    BTTT.

OK, so far, the GM patches are dated, and the strings are either rough or awkward-sounding. OK, I can try to do something about that.

Are there any other comments, please, positive or negative? How about song construction? Lyrics? How's the mix? (Remember, this is all done on my Mac, so don't be TOO rough.) Any and all suggestions are very welcome.

PS: Still no joy on the listening front. My version of QuickTime is later than the setup instructions provided by NoWhere radio and don't apply. I've been in touch with Waldo to see if he can help me.

    Blondie maybe?
Get rid of the saw-tooth synthwork.
Vocals are way too dry, except for the occasional effect.
Bass sounds excellant, great steady player.
    Drums lack ooohmf
P.S. Don't listen to anybody about style, its very subjective.
If it sounds good.... leave it alone!

Thanks, Paul. All of the above are fixable. . . I'm going to leave the saw-tooth synth pads as they are but I agree the dual-synth part in the middle needs to be completely revamped. (Actually thats supposed to be background for an extended guitar solo but there's nothing wrong with experimenting for a better sound.)
