Default Diffusers Shredding Sound Waves—Videos Simulations—optimized DIY diffusers for thesis

Hey guys. I thought you might like these videos that show diffusion in action . . . and if you want to know what happens to sound when it hits a wall of spikes, I’ll post that video in a few weeks.

Also, for any of you DIYers, I'll be posting free designs for DIY diffusers on my website. (optimized stepped diffusers that are simple to build). I'll make the designs available sometime before September... but if you want to build them right now, the info is in the thesis).

Kicking off this series on shredding the hell out of sound . . . these first two videos show simulations of fractal diffusers. First, I designed stepped diffusers using simulated natural selection (evolutionary optimization) combined with a physical modeling method called finite difference time domain (what you see in the vids). Basically just a fancy trial and error algorithm. Then, I generated fractal diffusers from the optimized stepped diffusers.

Here’s a youtube link to the first acoustic diffuser simulation video in the series.

I hope you guys like the simulation vids. Tell me if you want to see more stuff like this!

    Cheers,

    Tim

P.S. I’ll update this thread when more videos are posted. So stay tuned!

You know, without images of the diffusers designed specifically for DIYers, this post is esoteric. So I've re-upped the images.

Fair enough that my last post was edited and links were removed. However, that means it's harder to scan the post... so less people will find their way to the free designs.

I don't sell diffusers. I optimized them for my thesis, and I'm giving the resulting designs away. But it's time to be completely transparent...

    Disclaimer:
    • I'd like people to visit Arqen.com, download free stuff, and sign up to get infrequent email updates.
    • I'd like 0.1% of the people who download my free designs to say "hey, this is cool ... I need a consultant for my studio design project, and it looks like Tim knows his stuff ... so maybe I'll pay him to help me design it".
    • The diffuser designs are free for DIYers AND green building contractors who wish to construct them locally for sustainable architecture projects. But if you decide to mass produce these free designs in China and sell them overseas, Arqen Sonic will get pissed (and you'll get in shit).

    Enjoy!

    Tim

P.S. Here's what the diffusers look like:

    Tim,

Maybe it's not my place, but your post smells a bit like spam from several aspects...

You've only posted @ RO twice now... with links to a company that offers items for sale, including your own studio work.

While your work to assist DIY'ers is to be commended, you're still a "newb" here, as far as your reputation.

I'm not a mod here, nor am I anyone special... I'm just a surly old geezer that's been here a fairly long time that is skeptical of folks that come in banging drums and making noise... without helping anyone else... other than their own wallets.

I just hope you'll actually stick around and contribute good, solid content to those that are seeking help with their studio builds... and not prove to be another so called "acoustic expert" without anything of value to contribute, other than what you can manage to hustle in the way of business.

    Hi MadMax,

Thanks for your constructive criticism and level headed welcome.

I'm sorry that my post feels spammy. Regarding my absence: to be honest,
I'm no ace at being many places at once. Most of my time is spent working on projects
and giving (free) email advice to people who have emailed me about the diffusers.

We've been having a rich discussion about these diffusers in the gearslutz forums,
and I was hoping that you folks would also be interested.

I made one post in this forum, and received no replies. So it fell off my radar (until I
returned over a week later to see that it had edited).

You bet I'm hustling to bootstrap a business. And yes, I'm trying out some content marketing
(giving away useful, unique content, rather than bombarding you all with banner ads).

Obviously, I'm not very good at it (thanks for your feedback... seriously).

    Cheers,

    Tim

    Tim,

Like I said... I ain't nobody, but please feel free to contact Bigtree and place a banner ad. I'm sure it could be mutually beneficial.

In the meantime, please settle in and become active in our little corner of the audio community. There's good folks here who help those seeking to improve their understanding in our craft.

In general, I'd say we're pretty tolerant of folks getting off on the wrong foot... and helping them understand that this ain't GS. There's not as many posts, and that actually translates to a bit better overall signal to noise ratio. There's also not as much rabid, knee jerk bashing for asking the typical newb questions... or questions that seem silly.

That doesn't mean that fools/trolls aren't dealt with... they are... but they don't usually stick around too long, as it's not a fun place to stir crap up.

In general, I think you'll like it here... so, grab a cup of joe, settle back and offer help where you can.

(I'll take another look at the diffuser stuff when I have a few minutes... hopefully tomorrow.)

    Max,

    Thanks for the kind words!

I agree that the SNR seems to be better here than in GS.
