    Default Studio desk question

    Hi all!

I have a typical desk for my home studio that came from the local store. It is just one level, no level to put the monitors a bit higher. I do have MOPADS which raise them a bit but not high enough.

What do you suggest I do to raise my monitors with a professional look? I have seen products to raise them but the flat area to sit the monitors are way to small.

Thanks for your time and help.

Get the monitors off your desk by using adjustable-height floor monitor stands. They not only allow you to position the monitors at the correct height for seated listening, but also eliminate the destructive acoustic reflections from the flat desk surface in front of the speakers.

That is why I have Mopads. Thanks for the reply, any other suggestions?

You've completely missed what he's saying.

He's suggesting something along these lines.

This gets your speakers off your desk and away from your mixer.

He's telling you there are benefits from having the speakers at ear-level a short distance behind the mixer on stands of their own, so the first thing the sound reflects off - isn't the surface of your mixer.

Mopads are fine, but they are to decouple your speakers from whatever surface they're sitting on. Buy or build stands like this and put your Mopads on top of them. Search the forum here, for ideas on building your own with sand, cement, or lead-shot in them to give them some mass.

Actually you vcompletely misunderstand me, I want my speakers on my desk, so i am looking for an option to raise my monitors ON my desk not off. Sorry if I didn't specify I thought I did. I will for sure try to find something so I can build them. Thanks!

Actually I understood what you asked for, and wanted you to know you were blowing off very good advice from Boswell.

Since you have your mind made up, here are some manufacturers of studio furniture, this will give you some ideas before you start to build.

    Best of luck.

Without a huge explanation I was not blowing off any advice, his advice would not work for me although I appreciate the advice I had to specify. Either way I am not here to argue. Thanks for the links and the help.

Let's go against the evidence and suppose for a moment that you are actually of an open-minded disposition. For a reason you do not elaborate on, you cannot entertain the idea of floor-standing monitor stands, either the sturdy column type that dvdhawk pictured, or the adjustable central-pole type that I had originally imagined. You want to keep your monitors on your desk (and I take it you are referring to a computer desk and not a mixing desk). Destructive reflections off the flat surface in front of the monitors is one good reason for not having them on the desk, either directly sitting on the desk surface or raised on something like MoPads.

Here's a suggestion that I have seen used in a basement project studio: a pair of classical guitarist's footrests adjusted to get about 8-10" of height, and then put your MoPads on top of them. If you can find a guitarist with size 12 feet it should work out about right.

I think what everyone is suggesting is that you may want to do complete reevaluation of your studio configuration. It may be that you are so constrained that the monitors do need to be on your desk. But there is a lot to be gained by getting them off the desk and onto stands. You might want to start another thread with pictures/diagrams of your configuration and see if someone can suggest something better than the way you have it set up.

O.K. why would I want to get my monitors off my desk when I am trying to raise them, essentially that is the same idea as having a second layer(tier) on the desk in the first place. My desk is long and having them placed on stands next to the desk would be very awkward.

I wanted to add that I may talk shit back to you but at least I don't make fun of people for trying and not understanding, you didn't understand me and it took me apologizing and accepting you belittling me to get the answer. Not a good way to be a moderator. And as I look through the forum more I see the way you are with people so again good luck to you, i am sure your forum buddies will applaud you again.
