Default Robin Gibb Succumbs to Cancer.

I never liked the Bee Gees but they no doubt had a huge influence on music well before the disco thing. I respect them. Many of their songs were covered by many people. We have lost Robin Gibb. May he rest in peace.

Despite a lot of musicians disliking disco, it was a fun era for me and I learned a lot about poly rhythms. I liked the simplicity and think our current music is pretty much disco once again but worse. At least they were real musicians back then and some pretty big bands.

Billie Jean, Stayin' Alive, share the same formula that I paid close attention to when others were calling it crap. ... powerful songs indeed that had a huge influence on music.

    RIP.

Well, I'm a closet Earth Wind and Fire fan but that has little to do with this. Late last week we also lost Donna Summer. There were a lot of talented people in Disco but then there were a lot of people along for the ride. It's not much different today. There are some talented people in modern music. Then there's the rest of them. I agree though that disco is as big, if not bigger now that it ever was. They just don't call it disco. They call it dance or techno. And, no. It's nowhere near as good. Bob Lefsetz did a blog on Donna Summer. I have to admit I had to do a second listen. Those songs were daring and complex. I feel love was a 6 minute song with a long intro. Much too long for top 40. They chopped it for the radio. There's something to be said for the musicianship there.

Edit: you still can't make me like it though.

Let's not leave out Donald "Duck" Dunn, who was involved in some of the greatest and most enduring songs ever.

Had a lot of respect for the talents of the Bee Gees (I mean...from the earlier "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"..."Massachussetts", etc...into a sudden hard left turn of "Stayin' Alive", "Jive Talkin'", etc...what's not to respect about that foresight of a career move?) and Donna Summer for doing it different, though I wasn't into disco. Hard to ignore the talent.

    RIP to all of them.
