Gain Staging for ITB Mixing with Daw software

Hello everyone!
My name is Martin, first post here after reading lots of great information on here.
Many threads on here mention about "Proper Gain Staging" and I'm sorry but I don't know what that is?
Could someone please explain in detail how exactly you properly gain stage using Cubase 6?

Thank you everyone, hope you're all enjoying the new year!

Gain Staging

I know theres more ways to do it, but I normally try to keep all of my channel faders and main fader at unity or as close as possible, and get levels using gain. Only moving faders when needed throughout the night. I typically dont have to give it much gain, or any, for whatever reason. I have my crossover set pretty well, and hardly ever peak my amps.

Gain Staging for Monitor Output

This is gain staging in reverse. I have an MBox2Pro which has a front panel volume control for the monitor output. I use unpowered speakers, so I have a monitor power amplifier with separate volume controls for each channel. The controls on the amp are really input attenuators. The amp is 100 watts a channel running into NS-10M speakers, which are rated at 60 watts, 120 peak.

Urei LA4 as a gain stage for microphone

Forums

Noobie here. yes, you have endured one novice question before and I ask for your patience again. . Have any of you ever used the gain in a vintage compressor like the LA4 to preamp a mic signal? I did this the other night as my Ward Beck's aren't powered yet and I had to test a new reverb so I ran my tube mic into the Urei and then to the reverb then to an XLR into Pro Tools.
