Gain Staging for ITB Mixing with Daw software

Hello everyone!
My name is Martin, first post here after reading lots of great information on here.
Many threads on here mention about "Proper Gain Staging" and I'm sorry but I don't know what that is?
Could someone please explain in detail how exactly you properly gain stage using Cubase 6?

Thank you everyone, hope you're all enjoying the new year!

ITB

ITB - A term used to refer to music or audio production that takes place entirely - or as entirely as possible - within a computer-based DAW. "In the box" generally refers to mixing the audio in the DAW, using plugins for processing rather than going outside the computer ( OTB ) to external analog or digital hardware processors.

Dazed and confused OTB and ITB

I have some older vintage analog tape gear along with new computer recording gear...and I need some advice on how best to wrangle and incorporate all of the various pieces I want to use so I can record and  playback some analog tracks and then run those into my DAW, then maybe mix other analog sources back again..some digital stuff and some analog stuff and be able to move between the two

*one* piece of gear to mix through in my ITB studio

hello,

i have a decent InTheBox studio based around digital performer and a handful of, what i feel, are quality plug ings (UAD-1, Sony oxford, URS)... however, i've been talking to friends of mine about the difference in ITB bouncing down a final mix... vs. outputting the mix into a piece of analog and back into a digital recorder.
