mixing vocals

I've noticed that a lot of rap music (and I realize it's probably across the board), the vocals are commonly mixed such that they are very up front, with the kick and snare just punching through the vocals. the rest of the music is just behind the vocals - from a balance perspective.

hi.
i'm a little stuck in the way i mix vocals (r&b and pop).
i record the main voice plus the harmonic 2nd and 3rd voice.
the main voice i pan middle at 0dB
the 2nd voice i pan -30 at -7dB
the 3rd voice i pan +30 at -7dB
now i compress all that and put some effect on it (reverb or delay)...

I'm a 17yr old guy who produces rap beats/instrumentals and is trying to get involved in recording. So my "studio" is just my computer and a mic I bought at radioshack. I'm not trying to hit professional quality, but the closest thing to it...
