Am interested in everyone's thoughts about using two different mics as drum overheads. For me it's a practical matter - have two MXL 603's but one of everything else (AKG 414, Crown CM700, variety of dynamics...). Seems like the plus of getting two different sounds could be a positive. Just a thought!

Hi All. I'm new to the forum. I'd like to get your opinions on Micing techniques for drum overheads. Right now I'm in a good sounding, basstrapped room with C1000's as spaced overheads. I get a lot of mid range trash and not a lot of silky high end. The ceiling is only 8 ft (problem #1) but it is quite dead with 50% covered in OC703.
Should I be trying some other mics ?

what would be good overhead mics for me? I am willing to put some cash in getting a decent pair that would stay with me till the day I die...

Hi guys I have a sm 81 and a sp b1 mic as well as a pair of the Ecm-8000 omnis. Now heres the dilemma. Do I get another B1 and use them as overheads and the sm 81 on hi hat OR do I get another Sm 81 and use them on overheads with the B1 on hi hat? Or do i simply get a pair of the SP C4s? thanks alot

I've had it in my head that one of my next purchases would be a preamp specifically for overheads. Anyone have a recommendation (I'd love to see a range of prices) for such a unit? Seems like it would have a mixing bus for instances where hard left/right panning wasn't desired (since I'm using a DAW, I'd rather have analog summing) and mid/side decoding.

Although I am not a big fan of compressed overheads I have to confess that I have just burned my tongue recently-lol

I am finishing a new song of my album and realized that a combi of BF 660's and CB's did allow me to achieve nice tone.

So what are your choices on compressing overheads?

Hello all, i'm currently looking to buy some mics for a home project type studio. The cost needs to be bear minimum as its mainly for pre-production and i can't afford anything too flash.
I was hoping to buy just enough mics to do a kit on 8 tracks (Basic PC with midiman delta1010 setup). I was hoping that I can also use these same mics for Micing guitars/bass and vocals.

Any suggestions on some good overhead mics under $1000? RODE ? Oktava ? Shure? Thanks, guys.

OK folks, I've had a more extensive session with the NT5's today on my drum kit. The MP3 I've posted is a fairly accurate representation of the overall sound.

This MP3 is typical X/Y pattern, about 16" over my head.
