Re-Recording existing tracks onto new tracks in Cubase or Reaper

It sounds like a strange thing to do but I would like to record existing tracks from older files on to new tracks using updated software and VST amp simulators. I like the old existing tracks and do not want to record them from scratch. I have tried to add the amp simulator VST in Cubase 5 to an existing guitar track but it does not change the track at all.

Reaper is ..cool

You know this software feels just like they say it is. One thing is we had drop outs with Audition 3.0 but with Reaper - none, more tracks too and on a less powerful machine. We have two HP Media PC's. The one that was running Audition I have 4GB AMD Quad core 2.2 GHz. Vista features disabled,Audition crashed once every couple of days or so. Reaper has yet to crash in 3 weeks of steady use.

Rendering with Reaper x64

I have rendered a few songs with Reaper, but I'm having trouble with one aspect.

When I render any song, all VSTi's are incorporated in the final product, though any changes or modifications to those VSTi's sound are lost. Only the original sound is rendered.

Does anyone know what setting I need to check off or use to render with all changes to VSTi's in the final product?
