I have $3000 (maybe a little more) that I'm going to use to upgrade my mic or preamp...or both. Considering that I have the following, what would you recommend I upgrade, and to what?

KEEP IN MIND THIS IS A MIC THAT WILL BE USED 95% FOR RAP!

    AKG 414
    DBX 286A

Basically, how will I see the greatest improvement in my ending vocal sound?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Here is the booth (for your acoustic treatment viewing).

Get yourself an SM7 and a Heil PR35 and a good mono or duo channel pre. Throw in an Ashly CLX52 and game on.

Get a new mic and mail me your AKG if you don't like it :)
I want one of those AKG C414s.

+3-Sm7. Avalon pre's get alot of mention in the hip-hip/R&B interveiws i see. Emprical Labs' Distressor does to, although usually in the mix faze.
