I'm trying to find some info on a groove tubes 5sm condenser mic. I'm picking up a lot of mics from a guy who closed down his studio and this mic is in the batch. i'm not familier with it at all and have know idea what it is worth. I set up all 9 mics and recorded some guitar. Haven't got to sit down and listen to it yet. But pending I like it I need to figure out how much money to give him for it. I'd say the condition is about 3 out of 10. Still works fine but the casing of the mic is a bit sketchy. Anyway if anyone has any info esp some kind of price idea that would great. thanks

Can you verify that model#? I have a Model 5sc (it says MD5SC on the outside of the SKB case it was packaged in). The labelling on that SKB case also states that the mic is a tube mic.....NOT! I bought mine new from Full Compass on sale after a positive review of the mic in MIX.
Not a bad mic, but not really outstanding, either. This may be the same model, maybe not. If you have a recent Carvin catalog around, the mic I have is a dead-ringer for the LDC they are hawking... The era these mics were manufactured in was shortly before the "Chinese Invasion" of "affordable" LDC mics hit our shores. They all suffer from some sort of "resonator circuit" added to the diaphragm to "brighten" the mic's response, but this tends to make it "edgey" and "harsh". Mine has been relegated to use as a "room mic" for rock recordings of amps. Even if it was in great shape, no more than $100.00, with the case and its half-assed shock mount. Work the dude down, man!
PS: If yours DOES have a tube in it, looking kinda like an AKG CVR12, with little holes around the circumference (like a '56 Buick), and has a monstrous spider, that is a different animal, but the same series from GT.
Maybe worth $150.00 for that one.

I just remembered...the 5SM is a "M"ulti-pattern version of my 5SC ("C"ardioid)...ho-hum, but because of its ability to "go omni" it might well be a decent "room mic". Another tool....just don't get hosed on it!
