connecting a good pre to a not-so-good pre

    Hello...
Most of the computer interfaces that I've seen that have xlr or neutrik inputs go through an internal preamp. If I have a mic connected to a good external preamp, would the interface's lower-quality preamp cause any problems, or is there a better way to connect? I'm looking at a usb interface as it's for a laptop.
I was thinking that the external preamp could connect to a 1/4" insert, thus bypassing the internal preamp. Would that be better or does it really even matter?

Yes it would be better to bypass another inferior Mic Pre by going into a .25" input, preferably a balanced one.
