Do I need a pop filter for my SM57

Discussion in 'Vocals' started by ManchesterUpanda, May 22, 2009.

  1. I was wondering if I needed a pop filter for my SM57.

    I already ordered a windscreen: http://www.fullcompass.com/product/275420.html

(Not on that website. I ordered from allprosounds)

Is the windscreen enough, or do I need an additional pop filter?

Are you using it for vocals? If so, a couple of quid for a pop filter wouldn't go amiss.

If you're using it for guitars or drums, you won't need one on it.

It's probably worth getting one anyway, though, because you'll need it at some point, even if it's a different mic.

This is a quote from RemyRAD who may be the queen of the SM series mic's.
"The pantyhose lollipop types are quite popular but I actually prefer the foam pop filters. Those will actually knock off 1/2 DB or so at 15kHz and beyond. That actually can be beneficial for spoken word recording and/or singing. And you can get from Pop filters in numerous different colors. This can actually improving performance if you have the right color Pop filter. I mean if a woman is singing and she likes red and you give her a blue Pop filter, you might not get as good a performance as if you gave her a red Pop filter. Personally, I like the purple ones and the tie-dye ones. They're awesome."
You are new here so let me say her advice from years of experience is always sage. LOL, did you order the right color?

  4. I'll be using the mic for both vocals and acoustic guitar.
