Hi all. This is my first post here and my name (GreenGuy) says it all... I'm green when it comes to this stuff.

I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions coming in the future.. but here's my first: If I record at 24bit/96, aproximately how many tracks will I be able to playback in Protools with a 1.5GHz, 768mb ram, G4 Powerbook?

If I plan on using 5... 10... 15 or so plug-ins, how much will that limit the ammount of tracks I use?

I understand there are a lot of other factors to consider that can't be answered, but I'm just trying to get an aproximation here so I can plan ahead somewhat and have some idea of what I can expect.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated! :)

somewhere between 2 and 32 tracks!

get an external (7200rpm) firewire hd if you want to do alot of 96..... but first of all see if you can hear the diffence.....

there's no way to tell how many plugs you will be able to use....

    About two years ago I recorded 16 tracks (24 / 44.1) at once during 2 h.
PowerBook Ti ,667MHz, 1 G Ram, Cubase SX 1, Waves and TC-Native Plugins.
RME Hammerfall Multiface and a Adi8 via Adat. External FireWire HD.
Playback with some masterbus plugins and some send effect plugins.
    No problem at all.
    CPU about 75%.

Perhaps this will help you ?

    Have fun.
