hey guys, i was just wondering. is there any way to reduce the buzz in an electric guitar? i always have this buzz even without gain involved(slightly lesser buzz) maybe a result of it being ungrounded. i have to put my finger on the string area or lower the volume to keep it quiet. my guitar is ok its just annoying esp when the overdrive kicks in. any DIY techniques are welcome. thank you!!
  2. Is it a single coil pickup or humbucker?

If it's single coil then there is your problem, or one of them.

What is your signal chain? In other words from the guitar what do you hookup into, then into and so on. You might have a ground loop or there is just too much gain and your noise floor is too high.

Once we know what you're using it can serve to answer your question.

That 60 cycle hum... I swear strats are the best guitars ou there but they always come with the worst single coils.

I fixed that on my strat like the day after I bought It. OIrder some noiseless hot pickups, they will rule your world!

If you are able to put your hand on the strings and the noise goes away, it may very well be that the internal ground wire between the control pots and the bridge assembly may have a broken connection. This is a solid wire, usually not insulated, running through a little hole in the cavity over to the bridge. You have to pull the pickguard off to inspect this. Be careful, some models don't give you much slack!

What kinda distortion are u using? Cause sometimes u if it is to much of a heavy sound it can give an annoying buzz but to solve that, all u need in a noise supressor of some kind. Also, if you are using EMG pickups, which most esp guitars use, can give you a dirty clean tone which some people prefer but I will still go with a noise supressor. Here are some popular ones:

    Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Pedal
    MXR M-135 Smart Gate Pedal

    both run around 100.00
