Headphones or Studio Monitor?

Discussion in 'Monitoring / Headphones' started by carlodelmundo, Mar 18, 2009.

  1. Hi.

I'm trying to get into music again... and I realized how crappy the quality of sound I get from my build in computer speakers. I was debating whether to buy a professional recording headphones like:

    OR a studio monitor.

My goals right now is similar to an audiophiles--listen to music at its best but later on I plan to record my own.

Which is the better investment? Other monitors/headphones are welcome to replace that ones I've seeked out at MF.

    Thanks

I have them both, and I've got to say...

Between the two, it's really a preference. Also consider:

Are you the only one who needs to hear whilst mixing?

If I am, then I prefer the cans.

  3. For now.. it's just me who's going to hear them. What headphones would you recommend for the $95-$145 range?

Mixing is primarily done on speakers. You can however use headphones alternately as a reference or to check stuff, clean up a track, when recording in the same room etc. When you mix on headphones exclusively you will end up with a mix that sounds good on headphones, not necesarily on speakers.

Something like these KRKs will sound better than your built in computer speakers. These monitors look like they're discontinued. There are alternatives but I am not experienced to make recommendations.

A good thing to do also is to check them on common things too. Expensive studio equipment and flat response monitors are one thing, but if it doesn't sound good on iPod headphones, no one will buy your stuff.

I couldn't live without at least 3 different brands of headphones & at least a minimum of three different types & brands of control room monitors.

Mixing through headphones is almost impossible. When it sounds right, it's wrong. When sounds wrong, it's right. I know how to do this. Don't try this at home.

When mixing through speakers, make sure you don't turn them up too loud.

When mixing through speakers make sure you don't have them too low.

When mixing through your car, make sure you are not in traffic.

    Cheap headphones sound great.

    Cheap speakers sound crappy.

    Cheap math is an oxymoron.

If you give birth to eight children at once are you an oxymoron?
