How do you add compression?

    I'm about to insert a compressor/limiter into my audio chain. Here is my current configuration choices:

    U87/Senn416/RE20/Senn441->Fearn VT1/Daking MicPreOne->FireFace400->quad-core intel computer

    I presume the compressor/limiter comes after the preamp, but that's not the real question.

    As a long ranger; a V/O in a padded cell...how do I dial in the compressor when it is inline? The only method I can think of is to try a setting, record it, play it back and do it over and over again until I get a setting I like (and you know that I don't trust my ears). ...but I'd have to do that for every mic and every pre combination, correct?

    Is there an easier way?

    There is no easy way. Just like you may not need the compressor with every mic and for every track. You just have to adjust for each session. Otherwise you're putting your trust in a preset that may not work.

    What you could do is try out each mic and adjust. When you come to a setting that seems right for you, you can write it down and use that as a starting point for each session. Just keep in mind that you may adjust those settings or discard them altogether depending on the project or your mood that day. There are so many variables.

    It's a good idea to have a diagram/chart of your compressor/mixer/interface to log your settings if you have to stop a session and go back to it at a later date. This may be old news for you.

    Hueseph has some very valid points - I'd like to also suggest the following post, it's a good read on the what, why, when, and how of compression:

    Scroll down to Mr. Shotgun's post - long but very informative...

    Ah. Compression is like whiskey. Sure sometimes you want the subtleties of wine or a fine pale ale. Then other times you just want to get smashed real quick. I know there's a parallel in there somewhere.

    Sometimes you want the Laphroiag! Well most of the time that's what I want. Sometimes though Dalwhinnie does just fine.
