I'm wanting to create a semi professional home studio, and i know what mics i want, and some of the gear i want. But i've got about 5000-10000 to spend on the studio...
So, i'm wondering in order to achieve what i'm going for, studio wise, i want to get the DigiDesign 003, but i want to know what else to get with it...
    mixer?
    preamps?
    compressors?
    other rack?

i need a tutorial on what i need. I know how to record, i just have never really bought my own gear. But, this project is going to be a serious endeavor, i'm already setting up isolation rooms for drums and a vocal booth and everything.
    -Thanks

    Get preamps.

Tell me why you want a mixer.
    For preamps? No.

Instead of just preamps, I would consider channel strips which have the preamp, compressor and EQ all in one package so you can get the sound as close to what you want before you hit the 003.

A mixer isn't necessary, but can be very valuable for working efficiently.
I use an MX9000......(slight pause...waiting for the B****gher bashers to get on my case) I would never record through it, and I never mix on it (so why'd you buy it you freakin idiot, I know thats what your thinkin')
Well, I use it as a monitor board basically. I can control my monitors through it, run 4 different headphone mixes, and if I really needed a few extra preamps I guess it wouldn't kill me to use them if I had to. Anyway, it enables me work really fast without re-wiring stuff with clients there, which is actually kind of stupid since I charge by the hour!

    Good luck

what will you be recording? if a full band, then you'll need something like a presonus digimax which will give you more simultaneous inputs. if just vocals, then dont worry more mic inputs.

you'll NEED to sculpt your room's acoustics.

you'll need a selection of mics (depends on what you'll be recording)

    you'll need studio monitors

you'll probably want a pop filter

you'll need cables to connect it all

you'll probably want a power conditioner or power cleaner.

you'll probably want at least 1 channel of a "better" preamp (focusrite isa one, avalon, eureka, etc)

you'll NEED to sculpt your room's acoustics.

    Yeah, i'm thinking

    DigiDesign 003

Neumann km184's (for drum over heads, and any other overheads i may need)
    AkG 414's for vocals
    Akg solid tubes for guitars
sennheiser 421s for drums and guitars
    shure sm57's for guitars

i've already got the drum booth and vocal booth setup
i've got a wide aray of amps for guitar / bass

    bass
    Ampeg svt3 pro w/ 8x10 cab
    Gallien-Kreuger fusion 550 with 6x10's

    guitar
    Peavey XXX
    Peavey 5150
    Madison Divinity II
    Carvin Legacy

    drums
    ludwig vistalite 5 piece set
    DW Eco-X 5 piece set

I love the AKG414 series of mics. One of the best ever made. Not, IMHO, a great vocal mic. You can do better for the money if a vocal mic is what you want it for. Also the solid-tube has never impressed me....again for the same money you can get something else that will out cass its sound.
