hi, i'm new to this site. I am an artist trying to get to the final stage of the project. Everything was recorded in some f the best studios in nashville. I spent several days with a very experienced mixer there and now my masterer is saying the mixes are unacceptable for mastering due to the 'levels being slammed'. W have sent him several 24 bt softer versions and his latest complaint is that 'yes, the levels are lower, but they have been turned down AFTER the peak limiter. We all thought (g. mixer, producer, myself) that the mixes sounded pretty darn good. Is this guy giving me a hard time or are my mixes "distorted, lifeless, no dynamics" with no hope?

(by the way, how do i attach the mix to be critiqued and should it be in wave form?)

    Soundclick.com
Get yourself an account there, upload the mix and link to the page here.
Soundclick only lets you post 128kbps MP3s unless you pay - there might be other sites that let you do more.

First, I have to point out the funny:
"I spent several days with a very experienced mixer there"
An experienced mixer? One that's been used a lot then? I get what you mean though.

The purpose of mastering is to apply the master EQ/compression/limiting etc IMO. I'd take that to mean, give them an unclipped track with zero plugins/outboard gear applied other than on buses, auxs and inserts.
Then let them crush it to square waves.

    Soundclick is pretty badly organised.

As far as I know you need to go to the account (top right) and add a new band/artist.
    Then "add new songs".

  5. You can use zshare to upload your mix for free. You can find it here:

    http://www.zshare.net/

It has a 100mb limit though so i'm not sure if it will be enough to upload your mix in .wav format.

Hope this helps and look forward to hearing your mix;)

here is a great example of , if we had the audio here, and was able to discuss our various methods, looking back and being able to learn from our mistakes would be a beautiful thing.

just saying as I am going through posts that are about audio and sharing links.

Audio discribed with words remains abstract until you can hear it ;)
Post a sample, ask a question.. You're in good hand here !

This is an old thread Marco but a good example why audio is so helpful with a thread.

I should explain, we're having a private conversation over the huge amount of dead links in forums. The Construction forum, the Collaboration Forum, The DIY Forum and the Classifieds are all full of dead links that should be removed .

Max's thread as example, http://recording.org/threads/finally-the-saga-begins.14392/ he and his hot links to that thread are mostly gone .
Anyone coming in on that thread , reading post after post with the images gone are really at a loss. We are all at a loss.
    Follow?

Same with audio. We have thousands of posts surrounding threads to do with some soundcloud files posted. We talk about a mix, share to our readers why we think something needs more or less compression etc. and the audio is now a dead link. The OP removed or replaced them. We're all guilty of it. Its a problem we're trying to sort out right now.

--- but now I need to know -- was the mix ever heard and was it acceptable? This is like the serial podcast - who did it/ or didn't do it? Forensic mixocology -- piecing together the puzzle of the missing mix...
