Need advise on speaker placement

    Hi,

I will be receiving a pair of Genelec 1030’s next week and have got a couple of questions about placement.

How close is too close as far as them being next to a computer display? The spec sheet says that they are electromagnetically shielded... Hmm...

Also I basically have only two choices for setting them up in my project studio, but not sure which would be best.

The first set up would have them aprox 1.5 meters from my head at head level with 2 meters between them. But they would need to be about 4 inches away from my two computer displays.

The other set up would have them wall mounted directly behind my gear at a distance of aprox 3 meters from my head angled in and downward about 1 meter over my head (from sitting position) aprox 3 meters apart.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW; I do some music editing at ABC and we have the 1031’s in the room that I work in. When I first heard the Genelecs I was simply blown away by their crispness, accuracy and non coloration. My work sessions are sometimes as long as 16 hours straight and my ears never get “tired” of listening to them. If I even get 70% out of the 1030’s as I do with the 1031’s I’ll be in heaven...

    Thanks,

    Dan-

    Dan,

If they're too close or not well enough shielded you'll see "distortion" on your computer screen. Funny colors or bars or patterns, etc. So if the screen looks okay, then you can leave them close.

That's a tougher call, and depends in part on how good your room is. The conventional wisdom is that in a small and untreated control room you should aim to be closer to the speakers than in a larger room that has proper bass trapping. In reality, a bad room will sound bad no matter how close you are to the speakers. :) If you have the typical "guest room" setup you should probably opt for closer rather than farther.
