There's line level, and that can an in or an output. Generally a bass amp would have instrument level in' though. 'Line level out on a direct out perhaps?

Ok, you need to say what to where. If it's a line out from a bass amp and you're trying to go to the mixer, then 'line in' on the mixer. If it's from a direct box/xlr at mic level, then it would be 'mic/pre/xlr in' at the mixer.
It helps to keep the terms and meanings straight. 'do a line in on say a bass amp' sounds... no, reads like you want to feed the mixer into the bass amp, etc.

Had a dear good buddy do the same damn thing- 'I already got the line comming out of the sub to the mixer...' :?

Oops. Then there's also direct outs on some bass amps that are on xlr -hopefully adjustable so you can get the level down if need be.
