Question about 4 to 6 pin firewire

Discussion in 'Converters / Interfaces' started by ManchesterUpanda, May 19, 2009.

  1. I have a presonus firebox which comes with a 6 to 6 pin firewire cable.

However, my laptop only uses a 4 pin firewire.

So I've been looking around for a 4 to 6 pin firewire.

Does the quality of the firewire adapter matter?

    Will this do? : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189107

And do shorter cables mean faster transfer?

I can't answer the technical questions, but I had two firepods hooked up to my laptop via a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable and never had any problems recording 16 channels of audio simultaneously. It wasn't a special cable or an expensive one, just a regular cable I found in the local computer store for 10 bucks or so.

6-pin firewire can supply power to the devices where applicable. The Firebox has it's own power supply, so I can see any reason you couldn't use the cable you linked to.

As a rule, keep the cable as short as is practical. Electrons travel through (actually over the outer surfaces of) the wire strands at nearly the speed of light, so length is almost a non-issue with speed unless you're working in quantum physics. BUT the wire length can definitely affect the strength and quality of the signal over longer distances.

That's my 2 cents, I hope it helps.

  4. I dont understand what your trying to say in ur first paragraph. so, i can use the 4 to 6 pin or not?

What is a good wire length?

Is the product i posted okay?

You can use the 6 to 4 pin converter but you will need to use the power supply for the Firebox as well. The quality of the cable isn't all that crucial. As long it's decent, it should do the job. You probably shouldn't go more than 6ft with a Firewire cable. I'm not sure what the practical limit for cable length is but I'm pretty sure it's under 12ft.

  6. okay so the 3 ft cable that I posted (the url in the first post) will suffice?

i just wanted to know for that specific one, because the price is so cheap...

Sorry if that was vague. I'll try again...

Buy that cable from NewEgg in the shortest length you can get by with.
