When i plug my guitar into my sound card i can't hear myself play... Even when i put all kind of boosters on my channel.
But when i record and normalize can i hear what i recorded in playback ...

Does this mean i need to a preample between my guitar and soundcard so that i can hear myself play in real time?

Silly question but i don't to buy anything unecessary...

What type of guitar, electric or acoustic?

A consumer soundcard usually has two inputs.
    1 - Stereo line input
1 - Mic input (for multimedia mics)
Neither are acceptable inputs for a guitar.

You need an external preamp (standalone, mixer, pre/ADC combo, etc.).
You also need a way to get the signal from the guitar amp to the pre (mic / direct output).

Simply put, your signal chain should be as follows:
    For electric: Guitar - amp - mic / direct - preamp / mixer - ADC - CPU.
For acoustic: Guitar - mic and/or DI Box - preamp - ADC - CPU.

BTW, an ADC or Preamp / ADC combo would replace your soundcard - which you really should do asap. You use logic, correct? Step it up!

    Hi bent,

    Cheers for the reply:)

I'm using an electric guitar and i have a delta 1010 pci + rack unit soundcard ...
I was wondering if i could just plug a preamp straight into my soundcard and then play the guitar through the preamp using plugins like guitar rig from NI...

(I don't have an amp anymore so i can only generate sounds with Logic )

    Would it suffice ?

Yes, you can plug a preamp into the Delta. That's pretty much the way we all do it.
If you are game you may want to shop around for some of the Line6 amp modeling boxes.
The Delta accepts line level signal, so you won't have an issue there.
I recorded a band (Momentum) a few years ago with a POD running direct for all of the guitars, though I did 'make' the guitarist play through a little Fender on a couple lead parts. It worked well, not GREAT, but it sure was easy...
