i love collecting cds since i was a teener :) ...Does it follow that cds labeled as "remastered" was remixed then mastered again? or is it the same old mix just remastered?....i have so many cds which are now out again with the "remastered" copy :( TIA

    It depends.

Sometimes it means remasted but not remixed sometimes it means that the whold project was redone from the mixing to the mastering sometimes it means that it was copied from one format to another and that is being called "remastering" since it is taking one master and making it another master. I have a whole collection of different Simon and Garfunkel CDs that all say they were "remastered" They are from many different companies. The sound quality goes all the way from terrible to VERY VERY GOOD. The earliest CDs sounded like they were done off the vinyl records complete with pops and clicks. Later on they were actually remixed from the original 24 track tapes and then remastered and done very well. I guess it depends on what the record company means.

    Hope this helps.....

Remastered is one of those catch phrases record companies like to put on there product to help generate sales. Sometimes it just means that they took on old master and transferred it to CD. But sometimes it can be a much better sounding product. All the Van Halen, Rush, Led Zep. records have been remastered from the original masters. Those are truly remastered.
I have done a bunch of "remastered projects and they range from "here is the only copy we can find so do the best you can" to a project I'm doing next week with Twisted Sister. They are re releasing the Stay Hungry record with some additional material. I think they are actually remixing the whole thing. I will find out all the details next week. But it should be a lot of fun.
