I know that I am asking simple questions to musicians & engineers with commercial studios but I could really do with your advice please -
I have a computer based home studio and am having difficulty in separating sounds in a mix. I use Cubase SX2, a UAD-1 card & Alesis M1 active Mk2 monitors, but my mixes sound jumbled even after e.q. (guitars, drums, vocals & keyboards - rock style) I found working with 4 track tape easier for this ! Do I need to start looking at using outboard processors eg. Lexicon reverbs and preamps to improve the carity and separation of sounds in a mix, or maybe outboard like SPL's Charisma 8 ? I am trying to find the most economical route without buying gear that I do not really need ! There is so much out there to choose from !

If you restrict yourself to four tracks in Cubase, does this fix your problem? If so, you need to go back to mixing school, not buy more gear. Buying more gear will make your mixes even harder to untangle.

I mute tracks down to drums and bass get that sounding correct and then add in acoustic guitar and so on to practice mixing, but the more I add tha worst it sounds ? Yes I probably need to go back to school, or just continue practicing that is!

I would think about some better monitors but first I would spend some time checking out your room. If your room is problematic, even good skills and equipment won't produce good mixes. You HAVE to be able to accurately hear what's going on before you can do anything with it.

Try a few of these. Some work, some may not.

Well, I guess they haven't enabled HTML on this forum yet. You can just copy the links out of the code or copy the whole thing and make an HTML file out of it. Lots of good links there.

Hemmick, let me ask you something. I noticed you never mentioned what sound card you're using in your setup. This may be the culprit to your less than desired mixes that's being produced. Thought this would help get you going in the right direction.
