How much different, technicly speaking, is the SM57 from the SM58 when Micing guitar cabinets? Is there a big frequency difference?

From what I've seen, they're pretty similar. The SM58 gives a slightly darker sound... I *think* from the grill.

For another mike in the price range, try the Kel HM-1 on guitar. The results I've heard are impressive from a 100 dollar mic.

57 is pretty much standard on cabs, I reckon the 58 can't get the same sensitivity of response 'cos of the shield...lacks a bit of presence. I've never liked using 58's for anything other than yelling into during live performance or rehearsal. Personally I'd stick with the 57 on cabs.

You can make a 58 sound slightly more like a 57 by unscrewing the pop shield.. but it does make them much more breakable; I wouldn't recommend close mic'ing a drum kit like that!
