Hello - could someone shed some light on the U 87 model differences please?

    Thank you

    There is, apparently, a U87, U87ai, U87 P48.
Probably lots more - but what are the differences.
Are the capsules different - do they sound different?

    Thanks

As far as I know, the u87 was the first model and needed a seperate dedicated power supply, the 87a was put out with lower self noise floor, the 87 ai was the international phantom powered version of the 87a. P48 refers to the fact that the mic can be Phantom powered with two legs of 48 volts instead of internal batteries. Most Neumann models from the 70's upward had P48 on them, I have a pair of 89ai's that do. Neumann apparently has a great historical book about their products although I have yet to buy it.
