Hello hello...I'm seriously thinking about purchasing a used Manley ELOP. A very reputable dealer here in Canada is selling it for $1995 CDN, which is about $1735US.

From the research I've done this is a pretty good deal. There's a one month return warranty- no questions just return it if you don't like it in the same condition - and I would like some advice on how I should test that it is working properly, you know, limiting stuff...

Yes yes I know, my ears are the most important thing. I will play with this thing for many many hours in the next few weeks believe me if I don't like the sound of it on my recordings it won't last long.

I know this is a great piece of gear, I know Manley does good work so I know I should like having it around for tracking vocals, acoustic guitars and other such wonderful things. I'm just worried I will like the sound, but it will have something wrong with it and I won't know and it could sound even better if I fixed or replaced an internal componant.

I am not an electronics wizz so be gentle, but are there some simple tests I can perform to make sure it's in the excellent condition they claim? Or, should I get it professionally tested somewhere?

How would you test any other type of audio gear. You use it. Does it pass audio cleanly? Do all the knobs and functions work? Is there any noise or noise when you turn a knob. Do the meters work? Does it smell like it is fried? Does it compress when it is set to compress?

If you really don't have a clue, maybe you should avoid this type of gear until you know how to use it or what you should be looking for. You could always send it to Manely and have them check it and do what ever needs to be done to get it up to spec.

Call Paul at Manley - If there's a good "acid test" for the ELOp, he'll know it.

I have a special device to check just that sort of gear out. I call it "My Rack". While in "My Rack", I will give it a good going-over for you and report both negative and positive points of concern to you. I will caution you, though, that my backlog is currently 3-6 months, so you better get hoppin'...
