Hey all > I am going on location to record a very warm, intimate sound on a bosendorfer 7 foot grand. Playing style of the pianist is on the softer side. Standards etc.

If you could bring 2 mics and stereo mic the piano what would be your top pick. Also what stereo mic pres do you love for this kind of recording/sound.

I know it's so darn subjective, but I will be renting mics, so can go with the best. Just need to nail the call, as I will be out of town doing it.

    thx in advance,

2 AKG Blueline cardioid microphones in the 2nd and 4th sound hole for close up sound and if you want more room the same pair of microphones in an ORTF or crossed cardioid pair.

For classical?? (I'm assuming...) Is this an Imperial (extra lower octave.)?

In order of preference for stereo pair (all omnis)
    *Gefell M296
    *Schoeps CMC6 MK2h
    *DPA 4006 TL
    *Gefell UM900 (in omni)
    *Neumann KM83

    Preamps:(also in order of preference)
    Grace 201
    Hardy M1
    Amek 9098
    Summit TPA-200B
I'd like to say DAV BG1 or BG2, but I'm waiting on mine to come in now, so I can't give a qualified opinion on that. (I know - I bought it without hearing it first. I never do that, but at that price, why the heck not!!)

In that case, Tom's idea about the bluelines (good mics, especially for the price) and the Summits would be a great combo!
