I'm looking to buy a second set of monitors beside my 1031A's and was thinking about one of these Yamaha's because they're cheap.
I have not yet compared these in the store, but reviews on both of them are surprisingly positive. What are the differences? And why are the MSP5's more expensive? Thanks.

  2. I've owned a pair of MSP5s for 18-or-so months and I'm moderately happy with them. They aren't necessarily fun to listen to, but I seem to get translatable results with them. I also have a friend from back home who bought a pair of HS50Ms, which I've gotten to use on a number of occassions.

While It's hard to make a great comparison in different environments, the HS50Ms sound more pleasantly flat in the low mids than my MSP5s, which appear pretty scooped in this range. The MSP5s also seem to reach a good 10-15 Hz deeper, but the HS50ms feel like they have more headroom.

Both are quality monitors for the price.

you won't be unhappy with either. yamaha makes great budget monitors and, ostensibly, higher end ones too.

i have hs50m's and they sound great. i've worked a lot with MSP5s too. they're really good and seem to be "thumpier". not in a good way, not in a bad way. just different than the hs50m

    good luck!
