Does anybody record with a laptop?

If so, I have an E-MU 1616 unit that came with MIDI cables. The keyboard I am running is a Yamaha Motif 6.

Anyways, maybe I don't understand MIDI recording but my program, Sound Forge 6, does not read any signal from the E-MU using a MIDI connection. I get a signal from the headphone jack OUT on the keyboard, but it is very quieted.

I would really like to be able to record with the MIDI setup but it just isn't working. I'm wondering if you guys know about any other input options I have or how to get MIDI to work. I have considered optical (ADAT) and I am wondering what that is like. Any input you have is appreciated.

***SoundForge is a Audio recorder but unfortunately MIDI is not Audio. It is purely control information from your Motif. This can only be recorded in a MIDI sequencer, like Cubase/Sonar/Live etc...(which BTW can also record Audio). Do a google search on MIDI basics to learn more.
