Hi all, I just want to pick everyones brain on this:

I'm going to record a crowd at an NHL hockey game with 8 microphones. What type of microphones would you pick for the job?

I would think most hockey fans are as ornery as the players so I would suggest using a microphone that can stand up to severe beatings such as the Shure SM57 or the Beta 57, with its extended high frequency response. On numerous live recordings I've used the Crown PZM microphones as they can be mounted more imaginatively and I like the thinner quality of the crowd sound with those.

Will the game be televised?

I ask because if so, there will already be a buncha crowd mics in the arena. If you're in with the TV guys, you might have a chance at having them hand you a group mix or direct outs of the crowd mics they use for broadcast. Additionally, the in-house scoreboard crew may have a crowd mic or two permanently installed in the arena.

If I were you, and I were in those loops, that's the route I'd go. All you have to bring is your recorder.

If not, you're using 8 mics, right? Don't narrow that down to one or two types. Having 8 mics gives you an opportunity to use several different kinds in different positions/configurations.
