I am a relative beginner. I am planning on setting up a mobile recording studio. I want to be able to take my gear to customer and get a good live recording. the plan is to record the band live and overdub the vocals. this will be for demo's only. once i have a stationary studio space i can overdub everyone to scratch track.

gear i am thinking about is

Mac G4 with Cubase SX (already have it)
PreSonus Firepod
portable rackmount for firepod
Shure PGDMK6 drum mic package
3 SM57 (snare, guitars)
KSM 27 (vocals)

mic placement
PG81 OH splitting the set equadistant from snare
PG52 kick
PG56 top snare
SM57 bottom snare
SM57 guitars
bass instrument in
KSM 27 vocals overdub

my budget is $2000-$3000
eventually i want to add another firepod so i can utilize all of the mics to capture more of the rooms natural reverb.
once i get the gear i plan on doing lots of tests on my band to get good mic placement.

questions, comments, please!

if possible try and get the shure drum mic kit that has SM series mics rather than PG series, still affordable, but imho much worth the extra cost. also i dont think you need to mic the bottom of the snare, work on learning placement and get a good sound with just a 57 on top.

eventually i want to add another firepod so i can utilize all of
the mics to capture more of the rooms natural reverb.

first decide if the rooms reverb is nice or not... you dont want to add too much reverb of a bad room, that will make it sound muddy.

hope this helps

mic bleed

a friend of mine recorded my bands first album and i did the mixing and mastering. we had the snare mic on top but there was tremendous bleed from the hi hat. is there any way of getting around that? that is why i thought to mic the bottom.

thanks for the info guys. i will write more after some research of overheads.

so after much research. here is what i got

4 sennheiser e604
1 sennheiser e609 silver
ksm 27
3 sm 57
1 beta 52a
and stereo pair NT 5
firepod into my laptop.

i have run one test on my drumset. more experimentation to come.
i like the e604 on the snare and the e609 on the kick. i'll keep you guys posted after more experimentation.
