Ignorance is bliss, as they say. I've never had the chance to A/B converters. I have a MOTU 24i - picked it up on eBAY when I decided to start playing with multitrack recording.
I've come a long way since those days, and still have a very long way to go.
I know the old 24i doesn't come up on anyone's list of great converters. What I don't know is what it's doing to me. I've heard that an external clock will improve things. I've heard that 96 KHz sampling is a big improvement. Well, actually I haven't heard those things - I've just read them.
I'd LIKE to hear them. I'd love to know if my next purchase should be better converters, or preamps, or mics, or ... you know the drill. My software, preamps, microphones have all been through significant changes since I started this biz. The MOTU remains the same.

That's the whole point. I'm happy as a pig in feces with the way things are going right now, and there are other goodies out there that seem like they'd be a lot more fun to play with than new converters. There's a lot of information and misinformation floating around out there, and some folks will make you think that if you aren't using Apogee or better you don't deserve to be making recordings.

The old 24i suits me, although there are times I wish I had more than one pair of outputs.
The way things are heading, I'll be getting more choral work - very few mics, lots of sound, and one of the choirs I'm courting is quite good. I've been toying with the idea of picking up a MOTU HD192 as my base unit and keeping the 24i for those times when I need more than 12 tracks.
With a name like CHEAP TRACKS, folks don't expect me to have all the glitzy stuff - actually, most of them think what I have is pretty glitzy. I just have the same disease as most folks around here - I'm hoping that if I send all my money away I'll hear better.

I still have some 1972 vintage Neumann U87's, should I get rid of those old microphones and buy something better like an MXL?
