I've been wanting to record an album for years now. I was always disappointed with the quality of equipment I used in the past, especially in the vocals/microphone department. Also, the soundcard I was using to input and record from my a/d converter was crap and never functioned correctly. Now I have gear that I actually like and works. I'm just unsure which microphone I should go with. I have two separate demos recorded that you can download. One is a DVD video about 20 megabytes. I'm not sure if I'm crazy or not but the vocals on the camcorder sound great to me. The other is a snippet recorded with my studio projects c1 mic. I'm thinking of doing the album with the camcorder instead of my c1. It sounds louder but is also quite a bit noisier though. Maybe there is a way for me to make my c1 sound more similar to the camcorder. I'm using an art tube mp studio for preamp on the c1 and an art dio for a/d converter.

Think about what you just said? It sounds better off of the crappy camcorder microphone that is generally an omnidirectional with a heavy automatic gain control.

So that's the recipe. Omnidirectional condenser with a three dollar IC chip preamp in a crappy overdriven compressor and you'll have the sound you are looking for. The microphones are only $.98 each at Radio Shaft.

That's one of the reasons I recommend to people that they track with some compression, makes a big difference. It's different sounding when you do it before as opposed to after.
