Hi, i dj and I am trying to record a demo/mixtape to my laptop. I have an HP tablet and the stupid thing has no line in jack, only a mic input. As I understand the mic input has a preamp built in. There is no way i can buy another sound card cuz this is built in to the computer. So if I want to record from my mixer to my laptop, what am I going to do? Is there a way to disable the preamp in the mic input on my laptop? are there such things as external sound cards?

Kraken, yeah, pretty funny as I have a Hewlett-Packard DV 8000 and yes, it has no bananas today. I mean you're right! No line level input. For that, you need an external USB or FireWire audio interface. That's right, it won't be built into the computer. If your computer like my computer has a PCMCIA slot, you can purchase numerous audio cards by Creative/Sound Blaster and others. But I didn't like that one so I purchased a EDIROL by Roland UA-1ex. It has 2 RCA inputs and 2 RCA outputs, along with an optical input, 24-bit 96kHz capabilities, with both enhanced and standard driver support and only set me back about $80 US. I didn't need microphone inputs since I normally take my output from a mixer. Others are available by M- Audio and others that feature XLR microphone inputs if you want more of an all in one package?
Interestingly enough, the Hewlett-Packard computers which are featured as media center style computers shouldn't they have line inputs? What is with that? But I wanted the Hewlett-Packard since mine has 2 100GB hard disk drives inside, negating the need for a separate external while on location. I also wanted that LightScribe CD/DVD cutter. After all, it doesn't have analog video inputs either.
Do you feel stupid? I don't.
