also from experience since I just switched to my pc and did extensive research.
You can only use pt 6.4 with your Digi001 since thats the last version that supports it.
I would recommend getting an external firewire 400 or 800 drive. I use a G-Drive since it has the recommended Oxford chipset, and its only a 400 but im getting 32 tracks with a bazillion plugins.

Im running a P4 2.6Ghz 1GB ram, Asus Intel Motherbard (dont recall the chipset thin its the P4PE-X 485 chipset.

Just try and make sure you match the compatability information on the digidesign site to ensure optimal compatability and less hassle if you have to call tech support for anything.

Check out PC Audio Labs. They build computers for recording... and say that they have tested all of the parts for compatability with different interfaces/common recording gear.... and then charge you way more than what they are worth. Well, when you configure a computer through them, they list all of the parts by specific name.... sooooo.... you could put together a list of parts that are specifically offered (and tested) for their computers and then go buy it all off of newegg for like half the price!

I'm using two WD Raptors 74 GB on 10.000 rpm (for system and data) and one WD 200 GB (JB ... something) for back up, samples and other garbage. Perfectly happy family more than year.

There's some good info in those links you guys posted.

My Athlon 2100+ system that has been so good to me for 3+ years now has a bad habit of freezing with no warning all of a sudden. No error message, no CTRL + ALT + DEL, nothing. It just freezes and I have to reset the system. I tested both sticks of ram, disconnected my firewire drive, my 001, I haven't installed any new software lately, WinXP updates (culprit?)

So I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, all I know is that it is time for a new system, I was just hoping it would be on my own terms.
I have 3 different bands to record in the next month here, so I'm going to reformat the old cow and see if I can get a little bit more milk out of her.

It sounds as if you just need to reinstall your os.
I run an athlon xp 2500 with tons of plugins, tracks galore.. excellent performance..
yeah it may be a bit outdated, but it's really still a kickass setup..
make sure you're 1gig or above of RAM.
