i want to know if its necessary when panning to keep intruments away from voices in the stereo field? like if i pan voices like 9 o'clock an intruments fa left far right or visa versa

Though my key thought has always been "If it sounds good, it IS good," it is typical to keep the main vocal in the center (12 o'clock) and pan similar frequency instruments (guitar, for one) to the left and right in the stereo field. This is important because the similar frequencies would be competing to be heard and create all sorts of problems that could be easily avoided through panning. Some people pan guitars 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock, some people pan to 10 and 2. I'm sure some others will chime in on this topic, but that is my two cents.
