i was just wondering if anyone would be interested in helping out a struggling newbie to recording. I bought a firepod the other day and I have a LOT of questions . Anyone got an AIM, or MSN messanger address I could talk with them on or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Brandon

That's a wide-open request that may not get many responses. Probably best to read the manuals, do some online research, try to make it work...and then ask questions.

I suspect very few people have time to spend 2 hours of "Instant Messages" for 15 minutes worth of information. (Wait for response...dum-de-dum-de-dum-de-dum...."Which cable is that?".........dum-de-dum....Oh...OK, read response...consider question....write response..."The USB cable..."......dum-de-dum-----duh--(scratch rear...stare at screen.....wait...stare at screen....clean out earwax with pinky...stare at screen...wait........wait)....."what's it look like?"............review response...correct response...send.
Wait for response.....dum-de-dum-de-dum-de-daa...etc)

Personally, I despise "Instant" messages except for a quick..."Hey, call me at home in a while" from someone I know.

Try it yourself, first, or at least narrow down your first question. Try to learn as much as you can. If you have someone doing every step for you, and you don't understand why they do this or that, you'll not learn anything. Besides, you can always print out the forum responses for future reference when it crashes.

Give it a try, supply more info, and ask questions as you go. It may take a bit more time, but it will probably get done properly, and you'll know why. Ask more focused questions, and people here will be glad to try to help.

Of course, there actually may BE someone here who has nothing better to do than spend two or three hours setting up 15 minutes worth of stuff for you...so asking wasn't pointless, I guess.....I dunno.

Just trying to help

Well, pretty sure im not retarded. I know computers and whatnot but I'm just new to this recording thing. Everyone has to start somewhere, and I have no one around here that I know that does this stuff. Hey, obviously you can't help, no big deal, I was just seeing if there was someone that would. Some people actaully enjoy helping people out. I work on performance supercharged and turbocharged vehicles for a living, and I for one have no problem lending a hand to someone if they want to shoot me an instant message or even a phone call for that matter if I can help them out. Granted I can't do it all the time, but I help as much as I can. As for the researching thing, thats what I have been doing and I have a good base I think, but now I'm moving into things where I have no idea to start.

Hold on a second...I'm sure the Kapt meant no disrespect - but it's kind of like me asking you to IM me for the question: "So how does this engine work..." As you may have already guessed this is a HUGE topic and we could IM for 3 weeks and only scratch the surface - and those of us doing this for a living have to do t 24/7 to survive financially...so you can understand the hesitation...

That said, I would suggest finding some good reading. The book I require for all my students is this one:

"The Craft of Controlling Sound" by Stephen Solum
(You can get it from Lulu.com...)

This book is great for developing a solid understanding of the basics that will allow you to branch out comfortably into the other aspects of this field.
If you are interested in a be-all-end-all reference for everything audio grab the sound tech bible:

"The Sound Reinforcement Handbook" by Davis & Jones. Hal Leonard published it for YAMAHA.

...And finally, to round things out grab a subscription to EQ or another recording mag - they often run helpful "how-to" things.

Good Luck!
Eric

Brandon. Why don't you just post 1 SPECIFIC question at a time? Is there anything in particular you are having trouble with?

Trial and error is one of the best ways to learn. If it really becomes a problem for you, I don't mind spending a half hour here and there to help you out but I don't often log on during the day. Once the kids are in bed I'm usually free but for now try dealing with some specific problems and I'm sure you'll get answers.

well, i can explain how an engine works and give a quick overview, wouldn't bother me personally, everyone is different. i guess as you could tell by my profession im more of a hands on learning person being an auto technician. i learned by just ripping things apart and going form there. books don't do much for me as i hate reading, i can go through an electrical schematic like nobodys buiness or measurements on the internals of an engine, but sitting down with my nose in a book is like punishment for me. of course, there are the obvious things you have to read, but outside of that im not too interested in reading a novel. basically i was just looking for a few people to IM with every once in a while about recording if i had a few issues etc. (some friendly people that record as well) i don't know anyone else that does this. sorry if you are more of a traditional bookworm. by the way i appreciate those of you who have left some advice for me, like i said, anything helps as i'm pretty new to all of this. i will definetely pick up a few of those books for reference.

thanks.

I certainly meant no disrepect. I'm sure someone may even be willing to do SOME IMing, but I'm pretty sure they'd want to have a starting point...an idea of how far you are, and where you may be having a problem or question.

Are your questions about "How do I get this to worK?", are they "I got it so it records, but I'm getting glitches", or maybe "I got it working, but the playback is low and doesn't sound good".

Instead of just giving one person that info and relying on one point of view, if it were posted here, more people could jump in to offer their help.
Maybe your IM buddy knows most of it, but is stumped on something....much as I might be if it got into a topic that I didn't have experience in. Then you'll either have to find another IM buddy, or go ahead and post the questions here, anyway.

Also, at whose convenience do you IM? Someone may yet be willing to schedule a time, but you may have to understand that it's at their convenience, and if you're not finished and they have to go, then you're going to have to be cool with that. I doubt if anyone would want to just start the process out of the blue, if you just happened to see them on, and popped up when they are doing something else. I'm sure the logistics could be worked out, but it would have to be at their convenience.

You also may be advised to do things to your computer that requires rebooting at some point. Do you ask the person to stay online, and you'll be back...if your computer boots back up properly?

Everybody is glad to try to help, and a lot of times, someone's answer leads to more ideas. This is a good thing. Everybody learns. You have stated you are a beginner at this stuff, and nobody is going to publicly trash you for asking an elementary question, if you are worried about that. there is no such thing as a stupid question. It's less smart not to ask, and THINK you know the answer.

I'd advise just to go ahead and start playing around with the thing, and note what questions you have to post here. Maybe when things start getting narrowed down, you'll find someone willing to spend a bit of one-on-one to finish things up. The problem is nobody has a clue what they are getting into, and human nature dictates caution when confronting the unknown.

It seems you are steadfastly refusing to supply information, and wasting time trying to defend your position. The couple of days since your first post may have yielded some very useful infromation, if you were willing to let the fine folks here help.

I think most of the replies so far are leaning in this direction. If you just post a question to start off with, it will help for people to start to narrow down the subject. Get that part done, and you're always welcome to ask another question.

These forums are free advice from some very knowledgeable people (most much more so than I  ) I appreciate the willingness with which they share their knowledge and experience. I've learned a lot by just reading through a lot of things. They watch each others' backs, and will challenge an answer (believe me  ) but that just makes for a better learning experience. Eventually, your questions will get answered, and you'll know they are right, because nobody is going to let someone else's misinformation stand.

The answers here run through a "fact-checking" machine, namely other members. Personally, I'd trust that much more than just one IM buddy who may have biases or may be very good in some areas, but may lack a bit of knowledge on others.

Still, just trying to help.
