So. anyone had a chance to put a Cygnus X-2 through some studio work? Any opinions?

I haven't done any actual tracking on it, just a bit of playing around. So for I've heard it on piano and acoustic guitar. My initial impressions are that it's quite fast and clear, yet smooth. This weekend I'll be trying it on orchestra. Don't get too excited, though. I be recording the output of a permanently hung blumlein pair, and naturally the sound isn't all that great.

I got one of these units a couple of months back.

I've put up a song for download with vocal and guitars recorded through the Cygnus, recorded in my untreated room, in case it will help anyone get an idea of what sort of sound the preamp puts out.

I just made the account, so it may take a day or two for it to be cleared.

er, that's actually me (aside from the drum loops).

Thanks!

Bummer... I just realised that soundclick re-encoded the mp3 I put up for download to 128k... just downloaded that 128k re-encoded version, and (unsurprisingly) it's missing some of the detail of the original.

Anyway, the Cygnus has been a great purchase for me. It is very clean and detailed, with beautiful imaging. Complements the VMP series beautifully. As a lot of my stuff is acoustic, this preamp is a godsend.

There really is a big difference between this and the VMP series, so now I feel like my mic collection has doubled. I'm recording a CD's worth of material at the moment, and for the (for want of a better word) folky material, I use the Cygnus for both vocals and guitars. For some of the more jazzy stuff, it depends. And for the more rocky stuff, I have tended to use the VMP.

Importing something roughly equivalent to the Sebatron units costs a heap more if you are in Australia, and I have the comfort of knowing that the support is only kilometres away.

Just used one this weekend. Was mainly doing acoustic guitars for some rock type stuff, put an RE20 up close to the neck/body join through the Cygnus and a LDC back a bit through a VMP1000e. Magnificient sound, detailed without harshness, warm but not muddy, sat beautifully in the mix against the electric guitars with no EQ so far.
