Hi ppl...

First of all, sorry for my bad english, i`m brazilian and i`ll try my best here!

about next week, I'm buying my studio gear... but I'm still not sure about the overheads... reading some topics and reviews, i found that nt5 is a great mic pair to use as overheads... but searching harder, i realized that, probably, u guys have a good advice based on the gear i`m looking for:

MOTU 896HD
Mackie Universal Control Surface
Joemeek ThreeQ
AKG C4000B
SM57`s
Beta 52A

A pair of nt5`s would be a good choice about less $500? (i found $429 at samash) Or it would be at a poor level compared to all the other things?

I`ve heard about a pair of AT 3035 ($400, pair) or 4040 as oh`s... but i think the 4040`s are over my budget ($600, pair).

It`s better having LDC or SDC as OH? I spent a couple of nights just trying to fing info`s about that... =/

Any other suggestion?

Ty,

Gui

First, let me say that my experience with drums is quite limited. That said, I've tried NT5s as overhead a couple of times and have not been taken with the results. I have gravitated to LDC mics as overheads - my last drum kit recording was done with a pair of NT2000s as overheads and I was quite happy with the results, especially considering the conditions I was recording in.

I believe that the 4050 has been discontinued by A-T, which is too bad I think it's a great mic. But as for OH's I have had good results with the NT5s, and with the Shure SM81s as well. You have to play with the NT5s a bit more in regard to their placement, but I personally think they do very well. They certainly are reminiscent of my old ( and sadly stolen) AKG C452EB's, the only AKG mic I have liked. Another nice SDC for OH is the A-T 4041. Very smooth and extended top end.

The AT4050 was discontinued last year (2006) and is listed as such by the manufacturer on the A-T website. The fact that Musicians' Friend still has some available only means that they haven't been able to sell them all off yet. They're probably too busy trying to move Samsons and Nady mics below $100.00, rather than the "good stuff"...

Yeah I was thinking I should've checked the AT website instead. I was on my lunch break and didn't have time. Seems kinda weird those mics aren't selling though. There's not a whole lot of multi pattern mics in that price range. I'm hoping to have my first AT mic pretty soon. Either a 4047 or a 4033. (Funds will dictate which).
